I've seen your replies and I can see that you're confident about slate in general, but having looked further I am amazed by the variation in price for different types. A bloke in Vermont quoted me $150 per square foot for honed Vermont slate, here in San Francisco I can get honed Brazilian gray slate for $15 a square foot. I was told by the Vermont dealer that Brazilian and Indian slate isn't as good as US slate, in terms of hardness and stain resistance. The San Francisco dealer said Brazilian slate is fine. The Vermont slate was a beautiful shade of red. So my second question is - do you know if it's possible to get such a shade in cheaper slate, or are specific colours generally limited to specific regions (or even specific quarries)? The stone yard said it was a granite from Italy - is it possible that Luserna Fiammata is the same stone? There was another stone we liked called Jurassic, supposed to be a granite that was predominantly green but really looked like water flowing over rounded stones in a stream.
