A 981: I am hopeful that you might be able to either help me, or at least to point me in the right direction. A friend of mine, who does home inspections prior to sale, tells me that he has seen a slate counter top (this one had the kitchen sink integrated with a portion of the counter) that was fabricated in New Hampshire (at least that is the state he recalls). We are taking the first steps toward redesigning the kitchen here at the rectory and my friend, Kevin by name, has suggested that we consider using the same stone for our needs. If you have any suggestions as to how we might track down either this slate fabricator or any other reputable distributor of polished slate counter tops. Larry, USA. May 6 reply

A 1046: Our school is part of a 5 school group called "Gateway to Art." Each year, we select 6 art projects submitted by local artists. The artist does a training session with the volunteer docents who then teach the project to over 2,000 students from K through 8th grade. The administrations of all the schools are very supportive of this program but we do have to keep the per-student costs reasonable, with a somewhat flexible limit of $1.00 per student. One favorite art project which I still remember from grade school was carving a block of sandstone in the style of the Easter Island statues. I would love to develop this project and submit it for Gateway to Art. I need to do a feasibility study for the materials to determine availability and cost. I would also need to purchase a limited amount of sandstone to create examples and to do a few trail runs with children in the age range. So, can you help me find sources for sandstone? Many Thanks, Ellen, USA, May 3. Reply
